Teis Albers

2006 at 10.59 am posted by Veerle Pieters

We continue our illustrative journey through the Netherlands as our next guest is from ‘s-Hertogenbosch.

My name is Teis Albers, I'm a 24 year old designer from 's-Hertogenbosch / The Netherlands and been working as a freelancer for over 2,5 years now. I've been educated at the graphic design school in Eindhoven and started my company right out of school.

I find Teis' work very visual, colorful and striking. His flashy collages of illustrations, photos and typography sets him apart. His work is hard not to notice. You can tell from his style that music always played a major role in his life. Each of his works suits its purpose perfectly.

Various personal illustrations

Many pieces of your work contain an interesting combination of typography. Does it take a lot of research finding the right combinations ?

Every week I visit the font site dafont.com for updates and new free fonts. There are so many different faces, and I find it hard to combine them. Most of the time it's intuition or when I see a nice combination and then I try to find the same fonts.

Music seems to have a prominent role in your work. How did you get into that scene?

I've been playing in a band since I'm 14 till like 5 years ago. Music is everything, I listen all day to music, especially when I'm designing. I like the different moods it sets me to. I also worked as a volunteer at a youth centre, at that time I made a lot of posters for bands.

Growing concepts

Did it take long until you developed your own personal style?

Well I started out making art-school like scrapbooks filled with found paper, photocopied structures and all sorts of drawings. Later on I began making digital art and developed a more 'photoshop' style. It took me about 3/4 years to come to the way I work today.

What was your best idea so far in relation to your work as an Illustrator?

I once made a poster for a dj night in a club called 'vinyl at night' I took a picture of a full moon and placed a record over the moon... it worked so well!

How has the Internet influenced your work?

Massively, I wouldn't have known about so many designers as I do right now. There are so many styles and designers out there all represented by there own sites and portals. I love reading forum posts about design related issues. I'm also very inspired by the way the internet evolves, so much has changed in the way information can be accessed.
