Apple’s Dashboard

7 comments 2004 at 03.52 am posted by Veerle Pieters

My initial reaction to Dashboard was like most people “it’s just like Konfabulator”. As you know Konfabulator is a JavaScript runtime engine. If you look on Apple’s Dashboard page it says “build your own widgets using the JavaScript language”, but that’s sort of misleading. With some clarification provided by Dave Hyatt, it looks like Dashboard will be more then just JavaScript. The Dashboard widgets are in fact just Web pages. Every widget can hold CSS2,  DOM2, JS, HTML, XMLHttpRequest, Flash, Quicktime, Java, etc. With this knowledge the possibilities are more accessible for people like me with limited knowledge of JavaScript.

Efficiency means everything to me

If you are as busy as me you try to save as much time with meetings at a client as possible. Sometimes I find meetings such a waste of time, considering the time you spend in a car. This is mostly longer then the meeting itself. Like today, I had a meeting at 9 a.m. this morning in Leuven. If my GPS is not mistaken, it would take me 55 minutes to get there. Well, since I needed to be there at 9 a.m. I knew this was really impossible to get there on time considering all the traffic jams I have to face around 8 a.m. So I counted 1,5 hour and left around 7.30 a.m.

WWDC announcements

14 comments 2004 at 10.55 am posted by Veerle Pieters

There were 3500 registered developers at the WWSC, a 17% increase over last year. At last the new displays are here! I’ve been waiting for them almost 6 months and now I’m in the market for such a 30 inch beauty. There are 3 new displays: 20, 23 and 30 inch. The 20 inch has a resolution of 1680x1050 and a DVI Interface. The middle one (23 inch) has a resolution of 1920x1200 and also a DVI Interface. The big one has a mind-blowing resolution of 2560x1600! and has a DualLink DVI Interface and will cost 3299 Dollars. The 30 inch will need a special video card which costs 599 dollar.

My Tiger wish-list

Today is the day that most of us Mac users have been waiting for. At 10 AM San Francisco time Steve Jobs will unveil 10.4 aka “Tiger”. Unlike last year there will be no broadcast of the event. Good news is that we have somebody at the WWDC and if luck is on our side I should receive live updates through iChat/iSight(?) and will post them on my blog. In its boldest move to date Apple is already displaying some banners at the WWDC which sends a pretty clear picture about Apple’s feelings towards Microsoft upcoming operating system.

Dust & Scratch Removal

3 comments 2004 at 03.02 am posted by Veerle Pieters

Some scanners have Digital Ice build in to easily remove dust and scratches from your scanned pictures. If you don’t own such a scanner you’re in luck because Polaroid seems to be giving away software for free that works in a similar way. The installer lets you choose between a standalone app or a Photoshop plug-in. It’s for Mac and Windows.

Miss Double Dee vs Nasty Nancy

In what could have been me in Gurus vs Bloggers 2 (just kidding) it’s time for a rematch in the “Clash of the bikini’s”. The last few days have been rather cold here in Belgium so high time to heat things up a little. Hold on boys, we’ve got some pretty good action going on here but be warned some scenes may be unsuitable for sensitive people ;-)

Living on Ibiza

1 comments 2004 at 08.38 am posted by Veerle Pieters

House on IbizaIt has been a while since I posted something on Ibiza. If the weather sucks here in Belgium for a long time sometimes my mind wonders off and imagines that I am living on Ibiza where it is 26 degrees Celsius and sunny at the moment. Most of the time, Belgium is nice and luxury standards are pretty high. Always a thing that I start missing when being away from home for a long time. Only a minority on Ibiza is doing well, probably the club owners etc. If you look at these figures you’ll understand what I mean. Tax return figures from this year show that in Ibiza 80% of the population have declared a taxable income of less than 21,000 Euro and over 50% have declared income between 6,000 Euro and 12,000 Euro. Not much is it?

Salaries. Government employees are still moaning about how little they receive in salary once the high cost of housing on the island is taken into consideration. They say that people doing the same jobs in Lanzarote get 480 Euro per month more than the pen pushers in Ibiza.  (source:

Sometimes these kind of statistics are needed to wake up from a daydream.

Spice up the sound of iTunes with Volume Logic

7 comments 2004 at 09.59 am posted by Veerle Pieters

Every now an then an amazing program pops-up and surprises me. Volume Logic is such an app. It’s a plug-in for iTunes to be exact. So we’re talking about an audio plug-in that makes real-time digital re-mastering a reality for all iTunes audio so even streaming music from an online radio. I have the Apple Pro speakers with an iSub and the results are amazing.

Normally I wouldn’t even make a post of this but I thought why not, I feel happy, today is my birthday ;-) For those who wonder how old I am… right in the middle between 30 and 40. Time really flies I’m 35 already! Must sound old to some of you but I can assure you it doesn’t feel that way ;-)
