CSS Resources in one handy hyperlinked PDF file
2004 at 10.35 am posted by Veerle Pieters
CSS resources…. So many links to bookmark for later use. You don’t always need them right away, so what I do is manage my bookmarks in Safari and my dot.Mac. It’s nice to have them around but it would be much more handy if I had one document. A document that I can store and backup on DVD etc. There are some websites who have a list but what if those are down, it’s the Internet after all.
Well that's when the idea of creating a hyperlinked PDF file popped in my head. I've assembled all my CSS resources in this handy PDF file and instead of keeping it for myself I'm sharing this with the rest of the community. The table of contents is linked too, so if you click "learning" for example you're off to the right page. There 6 pages of web links defined in categories like:
- Learning
- CSS Layout resources
- Positioning
- List Styling
- Font Styling
- Navigation
- Forms in CSS
- CSS Guides
- Image Techniques
- Image Replacement
- CSS Showcases
- CSS Bug Fix Resources
- CSS Tools
- Validation
- Recommended reading
This link fest is the results of hours hard surfing and checking all kinds of websites to collect the links. I'm sure there are more out there but with this list you'll get what you're after most of the time. Both newbies and advanced CSS'ers will benefit from it I think. So enjoy and keep spreading the word about how great CSS is ;-)

Thanks Veerle.
BTW, we’re in full summer here in sunny Rhodes.
2
Veerle, you’re an absolute GENIUS! First the CSS tutorials, then this. What next, cold fusion? ; )
Thanks,
Adam AF
3
Great reference pdf. Thanks for sharing it.
4
Hi Verlee, this is my first post. However, you’re on my feeds. I’ve been learning a lot of css based in your experience and knowledge. You’re so kind. Thanks again.
Take care,
Gean
5
Cool, thanks veerle. Seems like my idea (to put my safari bookmarks online) is done right by you :-).
6
As someone new to CSS, I ‘ve collected many more “useful” and “beautiful” links on my computer than I have time to absorb…it’s been a nagging fear of mine that a big Crash would flush many hours of work collecting resources down the drain. But, I never did anything about it…
Brilliant idea!! I’ll be borrowing your method.
7
Thank you for a very generous gesture. Much appreciated.
8
I can see this coming useful many times - many thanks.
9
Very nice, but why a PDF? Why not just in good old XHTML?
10
Glad I’ve made myself useful again and people love my idea here :-)
@Christian, I want a personalized document with a nice layout (including my header etc.) and I want this all in 1 document. With xhtml I have also separate images.
11
Your awesome Veerle! Thank you for sharing this great resource. I’m still figuring all this stuff out so this will surely help me.
12
Nice! I’ve been looking for something like this…Thx! :)
BTW, when can we expect RSS??? It would be nice :)
13
Thank you for putting in the hours for us. A chunk of these are in my bookmarks, but having the PDF to review and compare is great.
14

16
Thanks. I can’t wait to spend some time exploring all the links. It was really nice of you to make this available.
17
@ Marco J. Campos: There is an RSS feed on the left just below the send button of the mailinglist. It’s there since the beginning of this blog ;-)
@Juque: I’m a girl btw ;-)
18
Great tool, Verle.
Have you thought about adding bookmarks to the PDF file? I know it is only six pages, but it was the first place I went to navigate.
19
Brilliant! This is exactly the kind of thing I need. I too have many CSS-related bookmarks that I would usually have to visite when I needed to know something. This will defeintly come in very handy!
Thanks for putting this together and for sharing you resources and knowlege.
20
Fantastic. This is a great resources for building a cross-platform website in CSS. You’re blog has helped in so many ways. Continue your good work!
21
I have a lot of respect for people who are smart and knows a lot, but I have most of all respect for people that share theire knowledge with the rest of the world!!! This is awesome!!
22
Silly me… :D Never noticed the RSS feed link… Me pretty dumb :D
23
cool. another nice gesture of yours - and thanx for the belgian baywatch too, seems to be quite nice there (esp. with the very important seagullpeople).
have a good time, veerle.
24
Apart from the Apple community we seem to be getting a CSS community where people feel they are somehow connected and don’t mind sharing knowledge… Great stuff !
25
Bedankt Veerle. thanks Veerle. Another nice (dare i say awesome) contribution!
Apart from CSS, Is there any chance you will be doing something in PHP inyour blog as well?
;-)
26
Thank You very much :)
It is very helpful indeed
27
If there’s a public vote on, I’d vote for a similar guide to Photoshop and Illustrator, for the less artistic of us, or beginners.
28
Your work is great, and willingness to share is wonderful. Thanks.
Perhaps the guy who said “Knowledge is power - Knowledge shared is power lost” was wrong afterall.
29
Hi all, I almost feel like the Mother Theresa of CSS after reading all those “thank you” comments :-) It’s great to hear you all appreciate it.
@Gabriel, my resource on those 2 are more limited then on CSS, but I’ll certainly give it a thought.
30
hihi.. hi mommie t.. (singing to the notes of fly robin fly)
31
Thanks for this awesome resource. How did you make the pdf look so nice? Did you use any special apps to create the doc prior to converting to pdf?
32
@Joe: The pdf was created in Adobe Indesign CS and the links where added in Adobe Acrobat 6. Indesign is a breeze to work with and you can create something fast.
33
nice tutor with PDF bro???
34
That was a good idea, I wish I would have thought about that. I’m jealous now.
35
This is an impressive list of CSS resources.
Good work compiling this list.

Hi, I might be missing the point here, but wouldn’t it be much better putting the effort into an online version of this, possibly where people can add/update entries directly?
As you know, the web changes everyday, pretty much as soon as you write something down it’s out of date, or the link’s changed, etc.
If you’re worried about not being able to access the list online (because your web host has blown up, or whaterver) then team up with some of your mates and get them to mirror it…
37
@James: Most of those links are already old and the list is quiet long and you have several resources so chances that something out is small but I know that the web changes everyday. A pdf is handy to backup etc and when time permits and updated list will be put online to download again.
Talking about an online version is easy but to keep it useful you have to check every link that is submitted to see if it fits the bill. You have to set up a list of members that are classified to upload something etc. If you don’t do that the list will be filled with spam in no time. Moving a checkpoint to another sever then mine isn’t easy because the admin can only run on one server etc. So writing it down is easy setting it up is a whole other thing.

I see your point. Let this be a challenge to whoever out there thinks they can handle it…! Something along the lines of DMOZ http://www.dmoz.org/ but purely for a specific resource.
39
Veerle,
Many thanks!
Your CSS tutorials and now your excellent CSS Resources PDF are much appreciated.
40
Veeerle,
Thank you for the wonderful work in compilling such a valuable list. I have spent endless hours in trying to put together my own list.
A great tool for Web Designers.

Don’t know if you can synchronize your bookmarks in Safari and your dot.Mac, but for myself, I use Mozilla firefox with an extension to synchronize my bookmarks at home and at work. Just to let you know

Hi I stumbled across your site and really admire the design and layout. I have been searching for the last couple of days for suggested resources for CSS. I would like to learn CSS as to apply to my designs. I know I have alot to learn and can really appreciate different designs and the level I am aiming for. Please feel free to respond with any other suggestions on timely learning.
Cheers, Shay
ps I already downloaded the PDF as suggested. I’ll submit another comment once I have reviewed your pdf.
